Water Stewardship in Great Britain

Coca‑Cola Great Britain understands that water challenges are different in each region, and we are focused on doing what matters most locally, where the challenges are greatest. The challenges faced in communities across Great Britain are very different to those faced in other markets, and our initiatives reflect this.

In Great Britain, Coca‑Cola and The Rivers Trust have collaborated to improve the health of rivers and freshwater ecosystems for over a decade. This partnership, supported by The Coca‑Cola Foundation and Coca‑Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP), focuses on restoring river catchments, fostering biodiversity, and building resilience against water stresses and climate change impacts.

The types of projects under this partnership include:

  • Establishing wetlands, scrapes, and ponds: Over 171 such habitats have been created, providing refuge for wildlife, improving water quality and reducing flood risks.
  • Innovative runoff management: Projects have diverted harmful urban runoff from rivers, protecting aquatic ecosystems.
  • Restoring ancient peatlands: The revitalisation of coastal fenlands preserves unique ecosystems and mitigates carbon emissions.
  • Water-sensitive farming: The Trust and Coca‑Cola have engaged with 437 farms to promote sustainable agricultural practices that conserve water and protect soil health.
  • Stream restoration and tree planting: Initiatives include restoring 14km of streams, particularly chalk streams, and planting more than 10,000 trees.

By partnering with local member Trusts within The Rivers Trust movement such as Thames21, Kent Wildlife Trust and the South East Rivers Trust, Coca‑Cola has ensured that its efforts resonate with the specific needs of local ecosystems and communities.

Coca‑Cola’s water stewardship efforts in Great Britain via its partnerships are already delivering measurable outcomes:

  • 14km of streams restored, enhancing biodiversity and water quality.
  • More than 10,000 trees planted, supporting carbon sequestration and ecosystem resilience.
  • More than 1,800 community members engaged, fostering local involvement and awareness.
  • 291 billion litres of water returned to nature and communities globally in 2022, underscoring Coca‑Cola’s capacity for impact at scale.
